About

Dr Michael Lloyd

Dr Michael Lloyd is a psychiatrist based in Melbourne, specialising in perinatal psychiatry, general adult psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry.

Perinatal Psychiatry

Dr Lloyd adopts a compassionate, collaborative, and patient-centred approach to mental health care. He recognises that pregnancy and early motherhood, while often joyful, can also bring significant emotional and psychological challenges. His practice emphasises early intervention, patient education, and shared decision-making to empower women in managing their mental health throughout the perinatal period.

Dr Lloyd provides specialist consultation on a range of perinatal psychiatric concerns, including preconception medication advice, management of pre-existing mental health conditions during pregnancy, new onset antenatal (during pregnancy) and postnatal psychiatric disorders, fertility-related psychological distress, grief following pregnancy complications or obstetric losses, relationship issues, and adjustment difficulties associated with pregnancy and parenting.

With extensive training and clinical experience, Dr Lloyd delivers individualised mental health care tailored to the unique needs of new and expectant mothers. He collaborates closely with obstetricians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and integrated care during this critical period.

Additionally, Dr Lloyd has an interest in paternal mental health, supporting the psychological well-being of new and expectant fathers.

General & Addiction Psychiatry

Dr Lloyd has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders, insomnia disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, chronic pain, eating disorders, functional neurological disorders, addiction disorders, dual-diagnosis (co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders), PTSD, and psychotic spectrum disorders.

Training and Professional Background

Dr Lloyd initially trained and practised as a pharmacist before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Queensland. He completed his junior medical training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (QLD) and Western Health (VIC) before undertaking specialist psychiatric training at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. During his psychiatric training, he gained extensive experience in general adult psychiatry and obtained advanced certificates in consultation-liaison psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.

In addition to his private practice, Dr Lloyd holds public hospital appointments in perinatal psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and addiction medicine at an inner-metropolitan hospital in Melbourne.

Beyond Medicine

Outside of work, Dr Lloyd enjoys spending time with his family, listening to podcasts, travelling, and staying fit and active in the great outdoors.
