About

Dr Laura McCartney

Dr Laura McCartney is a psychiatrist based in Geelong, offering telehealth services to adults aged 18 to 65. She supports individuals experiencing a range of mental health challenges including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, neurodevelopmental disorders, and personality difficulties.

Dr McCartney is committed to offering care that sees the person, not just the diagnosis. She recognises that mental health challenges rarely exist in isolation from a person’s relationships, health or life circumstances and tailors treatment to reflect the unique context of each individual.

Dr McCartney completed her medical degree at Monash University and holds a Master of Psychiatry from the University of Melbourne. She undertook her specialist training at The Alfred Hospital where she also completed an Advanced Certificate in Addiction Psychiatry. While she has specialist training in addiction, her telehealth practice focuses more broadly on general adult psychiatry.

Her career has included work in both metropolitan and remote settings including in Indigenous mental health services in Far North Queensland. These varied experiences have shaped her holistic, person-centred approach. In addition to her medical training, she has completed further studies in evidence-based therapies such as General Psychiatric Management for Borderline Personality Disorder and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Approach to Mental Health Care

Dr McCartney’s approach is collaborative, reflective and practical. She values taking the time to understand each individual’s life story, how their symptoms fit within their broader life, health and relationships. Her work blends thorough psychiatric assessment and medical treatment with strategies to support long-term wellbeing including attention to psychological, social and lifestyle factors.

Her care is grounded in the belief that recovery looks different for everyone. She works alongside her patients to clarify their goals, build resilience and develop self-awareness to foster meaningful, lasting change.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Outside of work, Dr McCartney enjoys running with her dog, spending time outdoors and catching up with family and friends.
