    How adult ADHD assessment works

Understanding ADHD: What to Expect from Your Assessment

ADHD affects more than just focus. It can shape how you manage emotions, handle daily tasks, and maintain relationships. A clear, structured assessment helps you make sense of these challenges and gives you a personalised plan for support. With the right guidance, you can gain clarity, build practical strategies, and feel more in control of your mental wellbeing.

Step 1 Start with an enquiry or referral

Tell Wellvue you are seeking an adult ADHD assessment. If you are unsure about referral requirements, our team can explain the next step.

    Step 2 Attend your assessment

A psychiatrist will review your developmental history, current functioning, symptoms, medical and mental health history, and other relevant information. Additional information or appointments will may be required to get to know you and your care needs.

Step 3 Discuss the outcome and next steps

Where clinically appropriate, your psychiatrist can discuss diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up options. An assessment does not guarantee an ADHD diagnosis or medication.

Founded in Canberra, Supporting Patients Across the ACT

Wellvue began in Canberra and is now based at Hibernia Lodge in Queanbeyan, where our administration team supports patients across Canberra, the ACT and nearby NSW.

Psychiatric consultations are provided by Australian psychiatrists through secure telehealth. Patients do not attend Hibernia Lodge for clinical appointments.

Our team can help with referrals, appointment pathways, fees and next steps before care begins.

For many adults, telehealth can make private psychiatric care easier to access without regular travel to a clinic. Telehealth is not suitable for every situation, and suitability is considered individually.

    ADHD Assessment Fees and Medicare

Understand the full cost of your ADHD assessment before you book.

At Wellvue, we believe comprehensive ADHD care is about more than receiving a diagnosis. It is about understanding your individual circumstances, developing an appropriate treatment plan and considering the care you may need afterwards.

Our usual adult ADHD assessment involves three linked consultations directly with a specialist psychiatrist. We believe patients should understand the expected total cost of their assessment, rather than simply the price of the first appointment.

    Typical Adult ADHD Assessment Fees

    Appointment Duration Fee Medicare rebate
    Initial consultation 60 minutes $800 to $1,000 $268.90
    Second consultation 45 minutes $650 to $750 $189.70
    Third consultation 45 minutes $650 to $750 $189.70
    Total Three appointments $2,100 to $2,500 $648.30

Indicative total after standard Medicare rebates: $1,451.70 to $1,851.70.

These estimates assume Medicare eligibility and the relevant item requirements are met. Fees vary between psychiatrists. Additional appointments or other clinically indicated services may involve further costs. Medicare Safety Net benefits are not included in these estimates. Your actual fees will be confirmed before booking.

Why Our Specialist Psychiatric Assessment Approach Matters

At Wellvue, your ADHD assessment consultations are conducted directly by a specialist psychiatrist.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors with advanced specialist training in mental health. They can assess ADHD alongside other psychiatric and medical conditions, develop individualised treatment plans and, where clinically appropriate, prescribe and monitor medication.

Our usual three consultation pathway allows time for comprehensive assessment, consideration of other conditions and thoughtful treatment planning. Where needed, ongoing psychiatric reviews can support appropriate care beyond the initial diagnosis.

A single psychiatric consultation may be suitable for some patients. The number of appointments ultimately depends on individual clinical needs.

Medicare Rebates and the Safety Net

Eligible patients with a valid referral may receive Medicare rebates for psychiatric consultations. The Medicare Safety Net may provide additional financial assistance once your qualifying medical expenses reach a threshold during the calendar year.

2026 Extended Medicare Safety Net thresholds

$861.20 for eligible concession cardholders and families eligible for Family Tax Benefit Part A.

    $2,699.10 for the general threshold.

Once your applicable threshold is reached, eligible consultations may attract higher Medicare rebates for the rest of the calendar year, subject to Medicare rules and benefit caps.

Why does this matter for ADHD care? Patients requiring several consultations or ongoing psychiatric reviews may benefit from lower out of pocket costs once they reach their threshold. Expenses from other eligible medical services can also contribute, and eligible families can register to combine qualifying expenses.

Your actual benefits depend on your Medicare eligibility, previous medical expenses, the consultation item and applicable caps.

    Already Have an ADHD Diagnosis?

If you already have an ADHD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, some Wellvue psychiatrists may offer a streamlined assessment pathway with appropriate supporting documentation.

Previous diagnostic reports, recent psychiatrist correspondence and treatment records may help your psychiatrist determine whether fewer consultations are necessary. This may avoid unnecessary duplication and reduce assessment costs.

The appropriate pathway and fees depend on your clinical circumstances and your treating psychiatrist’s judgement.

Do I Need a GP Referral?

A valid referral from your GP or another eligible medical practitioner is generally required to access Medicare rebates for psychiatric consultations.

Already have a referral and ready to proceed?

Complete our New Patient Submission Form, where you can securely upload your referral and provide appointment preferences.

Our team will review your referral and arrange for an appropriate psychiatrist to consider it. Once accepted, we will contact you about available appointments and fees.

What Does an Adult ADHD Assessment Involve?

An adult ADHD assessment involves more than completing a questionnaire or reviewing difficulties with attention and concentration.

At Wellvue, your assessment is conducted directly by a specialist psychiatrist who considers your developmental history, current functioning and overall mental health.

    Your assessment may explore:

    • Attention, organisation, time management and impulsivity
    • Childhood development and educational history
    • Work, relationships and everyday functioning
    • Sleep, anxiety, mood and other mental health conditions
    • Relevant medical history and previous assessments

Where appropriate, your psychiatrist may request additional information to develop a more complete understanding of your circumstances.

The aim is a comprehensive clinical assessment and individualised recommendations, whether or not an ADHD diagnosis is established.

    Already Diagnosed With ADHD?

A streamlined assessment pathway may be available.

If you have previously received an ADHD diagnosis from a psychiatrist, you may not need to repeat the full assessment process.

Some Wellvue psychiatrists may offer a shorter pathway for patients with suitable supporting documentation.

    Helpful documentation includes:

    • Your previous psychiatrist’s ADHD assessment report
    • Recent correspondence from your psychiatrist
    • Relevant treatment history and management plans

Your psychiatrist will review this information to determine the appropriate pathway.

Where clinically suitable, this may mean fewer consultations, less duplication of previous assessments and lower overall assessment costs.

Further assessment may still be required. The number of appointments, fees and treatment decisions depend on your individual circumstances and your psychiatrist’s clinical judgement.

Already have a referral and supporting documentation? You can submit these securely through our New Patient Submission Form.
